How to Study your Bible

Informational reading - Ask Questions of the Bible
I. Historical context?
1. Who is the author?

2. Who is the target audience?

3. What is the year or date of the writing?

4. What about the culture (economy, religions, etc.)?

5. What is the cultural meaning? (What did it mean to those to whom it was originally addressed?)

6. What is the purpose in writing?

II. Literary context?

1. What does the immediate context suggest? (preceding and succeeding verses)

2. What does the broader context suggest? (chapter and book)

3. What is the relationship between all of the passages?

4. What are the meanings of the words?

5. What do other cross references suggest?

6. What do commentaries suggest? (go to these last, not first)

Formational reading - Letting the Bible ask Questions of YOU

1. 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,"

a. Teaching: What is being said? What is meant by what is said?

b. Rebuking: How do I feel about what is being said? How am I reacting? Where do I fall short? Why do I fall short?

c. Correcting: How am I responding down deep within myself? What will I do about it?

d. Training in Righteousness: How can I make this principle a consistent part of my life?

Here is the difference:

1. The first step is information. The second step is formation.

2. The first step informs the mind. The second step speaks to the heart.

3. The first step we open the Bibles. The second step we open our souls.

4. The first step we solve problems. The second step we are open to “mysteries”.

5. The first step we learn. The second step we listen.

BOTH are important!
